The 3" Lockback has been one of Santa Fe Stoneworks’ best-selling designs since the 1980s. Designed by renowned knife designer Phil Gibbs, this historic model combines compact proportions, dependable performance, and timeless style in a pocketknife made for everyday carry. Its engineering has evolved over the decades, but the original concept has not: a refined, reliable knife designed to be used, appreciated, and passed from one generation to the next.

This premium version features a precision CNC-machined stainless-steel frame and a 110-layer stainless Damascus blade with a distinctive rose pattern. Textured titanium bolsters provide a modern contrast to the traditional lockback design, while brass washers support smooth, consistent operation. Its excellent “walk and talk” action produces a crisp snap as the blade locks securely open and returns firmly to the closed position. The blade is digitally precision-ground and finished with a razor-sharp edge.

Blue-Dyed Fossilized Mammoth Tooth

Blue-Dyed Fossilized Mammoth Tooth combines genuine prehistoric material with rich contemporary color. Mammoths relied on large, ridged molars to grind grasses and other coarse vegetation. When the fossil tooth is cut and polished, its alternating layers of enamel and dentin reveal naturally intricate stripes, waves, and geometric patterns. The fossil material is dyed in shades ranging from bright turquoise and ocean blue to deeper navy tones. The color settles differently throughout the tooth's natural structure, emphasizing its ancient layers while allowing portions of the original pattern to remain visible. Because each fossil tooth has its own mineralization, wear, and internal structure, every finished piece absorbs color differently and remains completely one of a kind. After thousands of years of natural preservation, the fossilized tooth is stabilized under immense pressure to strengthen the material and make it suitable for our precision inlay work.

We do ask for $12.00 for return shipping. Send the piece to the address below with a note giving your contact information:

Every day. Keep blades clean and dry, and wipe them with an oil-moistened cloth to prevent rust. An occasional drop of oil on the moving parts of a folder will keep it opening easily, prevent rust and reduce wear. Keep sand, grit and lint out of the mechanism.

Washing. Never put a Santa Fe Stoneworks piece in the dishwasher, and never leave one soaking. Extremes of heat and long exposure to agitated water will damage it. After use, wash the blade with soap and water, wipe the handle with a soft cloth, and dry the piece before putting it away. Do not use scouring pads, cleansers or any abrasive product, as they may permanently mar the finish.

Sharpening. Use a good medium or fine stone or steel, moistened with light oil. Hold the same angle for every stroke (we recommend 20° for a good general-purpose edge), count your strokes, then turn the blade and match them on the other side. Start with heavy pressure, ease off, and finish light on both sides. Never use a power-driven grinding wheel: it can heat the blade enough to damage its temper. Serrated blades need a sharpener made specifically for serrations.

Stone, shell and fossil handles. These are genuine natural materials, hand-fit and hand-polished, and they deserve a gentler hand than the steel. Clean them with a soft cloth. Avoid impact, prolonged exposure to moisture, and harsh cleaning chemicals or solvents. Stones can chip if the piece is dropped. If that happens, send it to us and we will repair it.

Wood handles. Wipe the handle down with a soft cloth after use and dry it before storing. Occasionally, wipe it with a good-quality liquid furniture polish to maintain its luster. Keep wood out of standing water and away from prolonged heat.

Storage and use. When a piece is not in use, keep it in the gift box or pouch it came in. And use your knife as a knife: it was designed to cut, not to be used as a heavy-duty tool. Do not use it as a hammer, pry bar or screwdriver. As Grandpa used to say, the right tool for the right job. Any evidence of misuse or abuse voids all warranty work.

PRODUCT FEATURES

Handcrafted in Santa Fe

Cut, inlaid, hafted and polished by hand in our adobe workshop in Santa Fe, as they have been since 1978.

No two alike

Natural stone, shell, fossil and wood mean the color, matrix and pattern of your piece are its own.

Lifetime warranty

To the original owner, against defects in material and workmanship, for as long as you own it.

Finished to walk and talk

Every folder is inspected, oiled and set up so the blade snaps open and closes firmly.

Coaxing the Soul Out of Stone, Fossil and Steel

In the shadows of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains sits a century-old adobe ranch house where our artisans have handcrafted art knives since 1978. Every piece is the quintessential marriage of fine steels with gemstone, shell, or fossil: rock cut on diamond saws, inlay hand-fit panel by panel, handles hafted and polished by craftsmen who have worked here for decades. Handcrafted in America.

F.A.Q.

Will my piece look exactly like the photograph?

Close, but not identical, and that is the point. Stone, shell, fossil and wood are formed by nature, so color, matrix, veining and pattern vary from one piece to the next. Every variation, vein, inclusion and color transition becomes part of the finished design. No two Santa Fe Stoneworks pieces are ever quite the same.

What blade steels do you use?

It depends on the model, and the steel is listed in the specifications on each product page. Across the line you will find 440 and 440C stainless, VG-10 stainless, 110-layer stainless Damascus, Damasteel and Feather Damascus, Hammer Damascus with a VG-10 core on our kitchen cutlery, and copper-and-brass wave patterns built around a VG-10 core. Knives we finish for Spyderco, Kershaw and Mcusta carry those makers' own steels.

How do the knives open and lock?

Again, by model, and it is on every product page. Our folders use lockbacks and back locks, liner locks, button locks, frame locks, and traditional non-locking slip joints. Opening is manual on most models, with thumb studs, flippers or assisted opening depending on the design. Folders run on brass, Teflon or ceramic ball-bearing washers, and each one is set up in quality control to "walk and talk," the crisp snap of a blade that locks securely open and returns firmly closed.

How do I close a lockback safely?

With the thumb of your right hand, press down on the lock lever. With your left hand, press the blade down slightly. Remove your thumb from the lock and grasp the handle on both sides, making certain your fingers are not curled around the bottom of the handle. Then press the blade the rest of the way to its closed position.

Are the handles inlaid on both sides?

For affordability, all handles are one-sided unless otherwise specified. Most models can be made double-sided for a 30 to 50% per-unit markup. Our handles are painstakingly made by hand with the human touch, never created by machines in large factories.

Can I request a custom piece or a special configuration?

Often, yes. Alongside our standard collections we make one-of-a-kind custom designs, and most models can be built double-sided. Some lines carry their own options: our 1911 grips are produced in a standard full-size Government and Commander profile, with beveled-bottom, Bobtail, round-butt and ambidextrous-safety configurations available by special request. Because frames and fitments vary between manufacturers, contact us before ordering a special configuration and our team will confirm the right profile. We hand craft every handle from start to finish, so email sales@santafestoneworks.com or call 505-471-3953 with any custom project questions.

Does it come in a gift box?

Yes. All products come in a gift box with information included, and we recommend keeping the piece in it when it is not in use. For gifting or display, our Custom Presentation Box is available separately: crafted in the USA from figured curly maple, lined with velvet, with discreet elastic bands that hold the knife securely in place.

What does the warranty cover?

We aim for functional beauty, and to help ensure it we carry a lifetime warranty on all our products. Use your knife as it is intended, as a cutting tool, and we will stand behind it. Any evidence of misuse or abuse voids all warranty work. And stones can chip: if you drop your Stoneworks knife and chip it, return it to us and we will repair it at no charge. We ask for $12.00 toward return shipping. See Shipping & Returns for the address.

Can I return or exchange a piece?

Yes. All returns must be made within 30 days of purchase. The knife must be unused and in its original packaging, and a refund minus credit card fees and shipping cost is issued once the goods reach us. We will also always exchange any item purchased directly through us for a different variation or style: any price difference is paid by, or paid back to, the customer, and Santa Fe Stoneworks covers the second shipping fee.
