1 review

The El Rey is the crown jewel of Santa Fe Stoneworks’ modern knife collection. Bold, sleek, and built for a lifetime of use, it brings cutting-edge performance together with luxurious design.

At its core is a 3" blade crafted from Damasteel Bi-Frost, a premium stainless Damascus steel made in Sweden. Its elegant, wave-like pattern, reminiscent of flowing ice, provides exceptional edge retention and striking visual character. The digitally precision-ground blade is finished with a razor-sharp edge.

The blade glides smoothly on ceramic ball bearings and locks securely into place with a precision button-lock mechanism for seamless one-handed operation. A solid titanium frame and matching titanium pocket clip provide exceptional strength, reduced weight, and a clean, modern silhouette.

Product information

Fossilized Woolly Mammoth Tusk

Fossilized Woolly Mammoth Tusk is a genuine Ice Age material that carries the history of an animal that once roamed the ancient northern landscape. Mammoths used their long, curved tusks to scrape snow and ice away from vegetation, defend themselves from predators, compete for mates, and display dominance within the herd.

After thousands of years of natural preservation, the fossilized tusk is stabilized under immense pressure to strengthen the material and make it suitable for our precision inlay work. It is then carefully cut, shaped, and polished by our craftspeople.

Its natural colors can range from clean white and softly clouded white to warm browns, honey, and rich caramel tones. These colors and patterns develop through age, mineralization, and the conditions surrounding the tusk during preservation.

Every section has its own color, grain, and history, ensuring that no two finished pieces will ever be exactly alike.

Natural Fossilized Mammoth Tooth

Natural Fossilized Mammoth Tooth offers a direct connection to the Ice Age. Mammoths used massive ridged molars to grind grasses and other tough vegetation. Those alternating layers of enamel and dentin created the remarkable striped and geometric patterns visible when the fossil tooth is cut and polished. The natural material can display earthy shades of cream, tan, brown, gray, and black, shaped by age and the surrounding soil and minerals in which it was preserved. Because every tooth formed, wore, and fossilized differently, no two sections share exactly the same pattern. Each finished piece preserves a small part of prehistoric natural history and displays markings created thousands of years before modern craftsmanship transformed the material into a functional work of art. After thousands of years of natural preservation, the fossilized tooth is stabilized under immense pressure to strengthen the material and make it suitable for our precision inlay work.

Bonita Blue Turquoise with Black Pyrite

Bonita Blue Turquoise comes from Sonora in northern Mexico and is known for its saturated blue color. Dramatic black pyrite matrix runs through the turquoise, creating bold contrast and a distinctive pattern. Natural differences in color, matrix, and mineral distribution ensure that every finished piece is unique.

Azurite and Bronze with Lapis

Azurite and lapis lazuli bring together deep blues, bright blue highlights, and natural mineral variation, accented by warm bronze. The contrast between the blue stones and metallic bronze creates a rich, distinctive appearance. Variations in color, matrix, and bronze distribution make every finished piece one of a kind.

Corvette Fordite

Corvette Fordite is a rare piece of American automotive history created from layers of genuine automotive paint collected at the Corvette assembly plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

During the earlier automotive painting process, excess paint accumulated on the tracks and carriers that moved Corvette bodies through the factory. Every trip through the curing oven hardened another layer of overspray. Over time, hundreds of individually baked paint layers formed a dense, colorful material that could be cut and polished.

Its stripes, waves, rings, and swirling patterns can feature combinations of red, blue, yellow, white, black, silver, and metallic finishes associated with different periods of Corvette production. The colors revealed in each section depend on the sequence of vehicles painted as the material developed.

Changes in modern automotive painting technology mean this type of Fordite is no longer produced in the traditional way. Genuine Corvette Fordite is therefore a limited collectible that preserves a physical record of America’s iconic sports car.

Every section reveals its own arrangement of historic Corvette colors, ensuring that no two finished pieces will ever be exactly alike.

Red Sponge Coral

Red Sponge Coral is a natural organic material formed by colonies of marine coral polyps. It is recognized for its distinctive network of pores, channels, and irregular patterns, which gives the material its characteristic sponge-like appearance. Because natural sponge coral is relatively soft and porous, it is stabilized with a clear polymer to strengthen the material, fill its open structure, and improve its durability and finish. The coral is then dyed a rich red to enhance its color while preserving the natural pattern beneath the surface. Once shaped and polished, the contrasting shades and organic structure create a bold material with depth, texture, and character. Natural variations in pattern, color, and porosity ensure that every finished piece is unique.

Blue Kingman Turquoise with Obsidian and Bronze

Blue Kingman Turquoise with Obsidian and Bronze combines vivid Arizona turquoise with deep black obsidian and warm bronze accents. Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass formed when lava cools rapidly, providing a dramatic dark contrast to the blue turquoise. Variations in stone color, matrix, and bronze distribution make every finished piece one of a kind.

Kingman Green-Blue Turquoise

Kingman Green-Blue Turquoise is one of our most popular materials, blending vivid blue and sea-green tones with an earthy natural matrix. Mined in the Mineral Park area of Arizona's Cerbat Mountains, Kingman turquoise has a remarkable history: Indigenous peoples worked turquoise near Kingman by approximately A.D. 600, commercial mining began in the late 1880s, and the Colbaugh family has operated the mine since the early 1960s. Variations in brown, black, and golden matrix make every finished piece one of a kind.

Abalone Shell — Select Grade

Select Grade Abalone Shell is carefully chosen for its exceptional iridescence, strong color, and remarkable visual depth. Abalone is a marine mollusk whose shell develops an interior layer of nacre, commonly called mother-of-pearl. Its microscopic layers interact with light to produce constantly shifting shades of turquoise, blue, green, violet, pink, and silver. For thousands of years, abalone has been treasured by Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Coast as food and as a material for jewelry, trade, ceremonial regalia, tools, and decorative inlay. Its luminous shell traveled through extensive trade networks, carrying its beauty and cultural importance far beyond the coastline. Our select grade highlights especially vibrant color and clean, luminous patterning. Because every shell forms naturally, variations in color, texture, and movement are expected and celebrated. No two finished pieces will ever reflect light in exactly the same way.

Kingman Blue-Green Turquoise with Black Matrix

Kingman Blue-Green Turquoise with Black Matrix combines rich blue and green tones with a bold natural black matrix. Sourced from the Mineral Park area of Arizona's Cerbat Mountains, the stone reflects Kingman's long turquoise history—from Indigenous mining by approximately A.D. 600 and commercial production in the late 1880s to operation by the Colbaugh family since the early 1960s. Variations in color and matrix make every finished piece one of a kind.

We do ask for $12.00 for return shipping. Send the piece to the address below with a note giving your contact information:

Every day. Keep blades clean and dry, and wipe them with an oil-moistened cloth to prevent rust. An occasional drop of oil on the moving parts of a folder will keep it opening easily, prevent rust and reduce wear. Keep sand, grit and lint out of the mechanism.

Washing. Never put a Santa Fe Stoneworks piece in the dishwasher, and never leave one soaking. Extremes of heat and long exposure to agitated water will damage it. After use, wash the blade with soap and water, wipe the handle with a soft cloth, and dry the piece before putting it away. Do not use scouring pads, cleansers or any abrasive product, as they may permanently mar the finish.

Sharpening. Use a good medium or fine stone or steel, moistened with light oil. Hold the same angle for every stroke (we recommend 20° for a good general-purpose edge), count your strokes, then turn the blade and match them on the other side. Start with heavy pressure, ease off, and finish light on both sides. Never use a power-driven grinding wheel: it can heat the blade enough to damage its temper. Serrated blades need a sharpener made specifically for serrations.

Stone, shell and fossil handles. These are genuine natural materials, hand-fit and hand-polished, and they deserve a gentler hand than the steel. Clean them with a soft cloth. Avoid impact, prolonged exposure to moisture, and harsh cleaning chemicals or solvents. Stones can chip if the piece is dropped. If that happens, send it to us and we will repair it.

Wood handles. Wipe the handle down with a soft cloth after use and dry it before storing. Occasionally, wipe it with a good-quality liquid furniture polish to maintain its luster. Keep wood out of standing water and away from prolonged heat.

Storage and use. When a piece is not in use, keep it in the gift box or pouch it came in. And use your knife as a knife: it was designed to cut, not to be used as a heavy-duty tool. Do not use it as a hammer, pry bar or screwdriver. As Grandpa used to say, the right tool for the right job. Any evidence of misuse or abuse voids all warranty work.

PRODUCT FEATURES

Handcrafted in Santa Fe

Cut, inlaid, hafted and polished by hand in our adobe workshop in Santa Fe, as they have been since 1978.

No two alike

Natural stone, shell, fossil and wood mean the color, matrix and pattern of your piece are its own.

Lifetime warranty

To the original owner, against defects in material and workmanship, for as long as you own it.

Finished to walk and talk

Every folder is inspected, oiled and set up so the blade snaps open and closes firmly.

Coaxing the Soul Out of Stone, Fossil and Steel

In the shadows of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains sits a century-old adobe ranch house where our artisans have handcrafted art knives since 1978. Every piece is the quintessential marriage of fine steels with gemstone, shell, or fossil: rock cut on diamond saws, inlay hand-fit panel by panel, handles hafted and polished by craftsmen who have worked here for decades. Handcrafted in America.

F.A.Q.

Will my piece look exactly like the photograph?

Close, but not identical, and that is the point. Stone, shell, fossil and wood are formed by nature, so color, matrix, veining and pattern vary from one piece to the next. Every variation, vein, inclusion and color transition becomes part of the finished design. No two Santa Fe Stoneworks pieces are ever quite the same.

What blade steels do you use?

It depends on the model, and the steel is listed in the specifications on each product page. Across the line you will find 440 and 440C stainless, VG-10 stainless, 110-layer stainless Damascus, Damasteel and Feather Damascus, Hammer Damascus with a VG-10 core on our kitchen cutlery, and copper-and-brass wave patterns built around a VG-10 core. Knives we finish for Spyderco, Kershaw and Mcusta carry those makers' own steels.

How do the knives open and lock?

Again, by model, and it is on every product page. Our folders use lockbacks and back locks, liner locks, button locks, frame locks, and traditional non-locking slip joints. Opening is manual on most models, with thumb studs, flippers or assisted opening depending on the design. Folders run on brass, Teflon or ceramic ball-bearing washers, and each one is set up in quality control to "walk and talk," the crisp snap of a blade that locks securely open and returns firmly closed.

How do I close a lockback safely?

With the thumb of your right hand, press down on the lock lever. With your left hand, press the blade down slightly. Remove your thumb from the lock and grasp the handle on both sides, making certain your fingers are not curled around the bottom of the handle. Then press the blade the rest of the way to its closed position.

Are the handles inlaid on both sides?

For affordability, all handles are one-sided unless otherwise specified. Most models can be made double-sided for a 30 to 50% per-unit markup. Our handles are painstakingly made by hand with the human touch, never created by machines in large factories.

Can I request a custom piece or a special configuration?

Often, yes. Alongside our standard collections we make one-of-a-kind custom designs, and most models can be built double-sided. Some lines carry their own options: our 1911 grips are produced in a standard full-size Government and Commander profile, with beveled-bottom, Bobtail, round-butt and ambidextrous-safety configurations available by special request. Because frames and fitments vary between manufacturers, contact us before ordering a special configuration and our team will confirm the right profile. We hand craft every handle from start to finish, so email sales@santafestoneworks.com or call 505-471-3953 with any custom project questions.

Does it come in a gift box?

Yes. All products come in a gift box with information included, and we recommend keeping the piece in it when it is not in use. For gifting or display, our Custom Presentation Box is available separately: crafted in the USA from figured curly maple, lined with velvet, with discreet elastic bands that hold the knife securely in place.

What does the warranty cover?

We aim for functional beauty, and to help ensure it we carry a lifetime warranty on all our products. Use your knife as it is intended, as a cutting tool, and we will stand behind it. Any evidence of misuse or abuse voids all warranty work. And stones can chip: if you drop your Stoneworks knife and chip it, return it to us and we will repair it at no charge. We ask for $12.00 toward return shipping. See Shipping & Returns for the address.

Can I return or exchange a piece?

Yes. All returns must be made within 30 days of purchase. The knife must be unused and in its original packaging, and a refund minus credit card fees and shipping cost is issued once the goods reach us. We will also always exchange any item purchased directly through us for a different variation or style: any price difference is paid by, or paid back to, the customer, and Santa Fe Stoneworks covers the second shipping fee. Email sales@santafestoneworks.com for all inquiries.
